A fairly hectic week, lots of what I hope was good quality training, some not so good quality eating and a bit of work posing for shots to advertise the Bupa 10km run! Delighted the hour has gone forward although the fact that I was up at 0620 yesterday morning (0520 old time) meant the spin out to follow the Vets race in Batterstown was savagely cold with the hands nearly falling off me by the time I got there…anyway to go back a few days first. Somehow Fergus, Moody and I were roped into doing a photo shoot with Mary Cullen for the Bupa 10km with us in full RNLI gear. Moody was initially not overly keen until he was told there is a chance some of these shots might end up in the papers… meetings were quickly re organized allowing him time to turn up! All I can say about the whole thing is Poor Mary…

I think the three of us will be running Bupa wearing a slightly lighter version of the gear though how I managed to get myself into this is still beyond me.. it was actually a bit embarrassing (not just the photos as you can clearly see) as when we turned up Mary was under the impression that we were actual lifeboat crew.. Obviously not the case.
On the training front, the volume currently is resulting in my having to eat like a horse. Most packets of pasta say on them that the will serve 2-3 people. This is now a nonsense as one packet would barely count as a snack and need to be accompanied by at least a couple of steaks or chicken breasts. However, the old sweet tooth is a bit of a problem and I have developed a worrying taste for chocolate milk. If I start on the swiss rolls (mood dog) I will be in real trouble. Cycled out to batterstown yesterday to follow the Vets race.. hung about the back of the first group with Conor for the three laps although not sure that the Vets were too happy about us being there. One fella did say to me I looked very young to be racing vets.. we managed to stay out of the actual racing and then headed back home afterwards. All in it was a good spin (140km or so) and that was followed by a run later that afternoon. Much food consumed last night.
March 24…
Managed a decent enough weekend of training despite going on the major last on Saturday night to celebrate the Grand Slam!! The fact that I done a 4+ hour spin that morning reduced my ability to handle the alcohol so it ended up being a fairly mental evening, and was also a celebration of Gus and Sinead getting engaged. The Sunday bike ride was pretty awful. I was to have a day off but messed up a training spin on Thursday so the Dark Lord told me to repeat it Sunday… That will lean me.
Got copy of Triathlon 220 yesterday and to my wife’s horror there is a whole article on waxing / shaving of the legs… yes its getting to that time of the year again, and given that they are skinny little things I reckon they need the attention. Also looking through the magazine make me wonder if I shouldn’t be spending a bit more money on my bike by converting the Q Roo to Campagnolo. A trip to Cyclelogical is no on the cards… oh dear.
Really looking forward to Fergus & Sinead’s engagement party this Saturday night in Harrys (Clontarf) where it’s a long day of Rugby followed by party at 1900hrs!!! Have a long swim to get through this eve (3.2km) and about 5 hours on the bike before then but with the weather improving that could actually be a nice spin. Getting serious flack from Moody who in fairness to him is pretty good at this blog business but he is giving me some pointers which I think could help out… lets wait and see.
Back to work.
Spent the long Paddys weekend doing some cross training (skiing actually) in France with Jan (my very patient wife) and some of the family. Weather was fantastic with perfect spring skiing in the sun. Probably ended up eating too much and the couple of beers will in all likelihood not do my chances of beating Moody this year any favors but I guess it had to be done. Back home now and delighted the weather is so much better. I went on a 90 minute run last night, first time this year I didn’t have to wear the nike tights…. Skinny legs on show (my coach Mark has me doing extra squats in an effort to build them up..I think he is embarrassed by them!). Actually looking forward to the weekend on the bike with the forecast for more clear blue sky on offer. Maybe even a trip up the sally gap now the risk of ice is gone!!
Totally worn out (as I guess I should be on an easy week). Last three weeks training are below….to give you an idea of the volume currently. Instead of the long 5 hr ride on sat I ended up doing an open race in Dunboyne with Ger, Mark and Robert. Mark rode with the A,B riders while Ger Rob and I rode with the Cs and Vets… of course the pace from the get to was nuts and I ended up getting dropped coming out of a corner… good thing too as there was a decent crash later on which I surely would have been involved in given my bike skills… still, racing the bike is bound to improve my triathlon times. Have today off, and then heading to France tomorrow so training wise it will be cross counrty ski for a couple of days with running in the evening.

I am starting my first blog during a rest week, as in fairness I’ve been too tired to write anything for the last couple of weeks so apologies to Niall who set up this site for me a good while ago and has seen nothing happening here since then! As this is the first blog, I’ll introduce myself to those of you unfortunate enough to have stumbled on this site.
If I had attended a school that published in its final year book a ‘most likely’ comment then Triathlon and Ironman would not have featured anywhere near my name. Anyway, I got into the sport in 2008 and from a sprint in May 08, ended up doing a Half Ironman at the end of last season. I have to confess that during the swim part of Tri Athy in May 2008 I seriously regretted buying a time trial bike, but like a lot of these things, I ended up forgetting the pain part of the races and hence found myself signing up for the full fat Ironman in 2009.
